Duties and Responsibilities

The Township Rural Zoning Act authorizes the township board to designate in its zoning ordinance the proper official or officials to enforce the ordinance.  This person issues occupancy permits and enforces the provisions of the zoning ordinance by criminal action, civil infraction or injunction.

If a township is administering and enforcing its own building cod or the State Construction Code, the offices of zoning inspector or administrator and building inspector are frequently combined into one person, although it is not mandatory.  Under the State Construction Code, however, a building official must be licensed by the state before assuming the position.
